MYOB may not be the name that comes to mind when you think of small-business accounting software, but it was one of the first for Windows. For $299 (direct), MYOB Premier Accounting 2008 offers a very capable set of tools, and the application's Macintosh beginnings give it one of the cleanest, most easily navigable interfaces among its peers. The current version doesn't add an enormous amount to the previous one, though—most of the major changes enhance the areas of customer, vendor, and employee relations. So, for example, you'll find improved vacation and sick-leave tracking, vendor check stubs, and itemized customer statements. While this isn't a major upgrade, the core capabilities are strong. Still, MYOB hasn't kept up with the online capabilities of its rivals, such as Microsoft Office Accounting Professional 2008, Peachtree by Sage Complete Accounting 2009, and QuickBooks Accounting Pro Edition 2009.

Your first hours with the software will be about as easy as with competing products. The Easy Setup Assistant divides the product into five categories: Customize, Accounts, Sales, Purchases, and Payroll. Each asks you to define preferences—for example, whether you deal in multiple currencies, what your opening balances are, and which sales layout you'll use. The setup tools are roughly comparable to those of the challengers.

I like MYOB's navigational convention, the Command Center; it's a better interface than that of most of the competition. It's simple and clean—a box that contains icons for every program area: Accounts, Banking, Sales, Time Billing, Purchases, Payroll, Inventory, and Card File. Click on one and an interactive, graphical flowchart shows you the path through that module's tasks. Select the Sales icon, say, and the chart will display items like Enter Sales, Receive Payments, and Transaction Journal. Interactive links at the bottom of the box take you to your to-do list, reports, a transaction finder, and an analysis tool. Only Microsoft Office Accounting Professional 2008 offers an interface with lower barrier to entry, thanks to its similarity to Outlook, with which most office workers likely to be handling accounting have a deep familiarity.

MYOB's To-Do List, which serves as a kind of control dashboard for the program, is a tabbed window that displays tasks due in several categories, including Recurring Purchases, Expiring Discounts, and Stock Alert. Every accounting program has a method of earmarking this information, but I prefer QuickBooks' more comprehensive and interactive approach.

In another setup task, you fill customer, vendor, and employee records, which you'll use when creating documents such as invoices and paychecks. The records are stored in the Card File, a graphical box with tabs for each type of data, such as customers, vendors, and employees. Other contemporary accounting programs help you build databases, but they don't make them available in one place. Overall, MYOB's Cards are more thorough than QuickBooks' records.

Clicking on a tab in the Card File produces a window with associated tasks. Selecting one opens another window containing appropriate tools. For example, click on the Purchases tab, then on Enter Purchases in the resulting window, and a purchase-order form opens. You can select most of the requested information from drop-down lists or grab it from existing orders or quotes that open in another window. Buttons below the form give you access to the same types of related options you'll find in competing products, letting you perform tasks such as sending the purchase order via e-mail or fax, saving it to the hard drive, changing the layout, or viewing the vendor register.—Next: The B stands for Business, not Banking
