- Pros
Harmon Kardon speakers dish out delicious-sounding audio. Great-looking display. Blu-ray drive.
- Cons
Disappointing battery life. Glossy display. Display doesn?t support 1080p playback.
- Bottom Line
The Toshiba Satellite A665-S6085 gets the performance boost its predecessor sorely needed, while still being an excellent entertainment laptop, because of its amazing-sounding audio and gorgeous-looking display. A Blu-ray drive sweetens its appeal, but below-average battery life leaves a sour aftertaste.
The last time we looked at an A665D model from Toshiba—the Toshiba Satellite A665D-S6051 ($799.98 list, 3 stars)—we were largely unimpressed by what the 16-inch laptop brought to the table other than a pair of amazing-sounding Harman Kardon speakers. No other standout features and lackluster performance pegged the A665D as a decent choice as an entertainment laptop and little else. Fast-forward three months later and the new, but identical, Toshiba Satellite A665D-S6085 ($799.98 list at Staples), showed up. Luckily, this time around, Toshiba outfitted the A665D-S6085 with more robust components, giving the laptop the application performance boost it sorely needed. Toshiba also added a Blu-ray drive as well, increasing the A665D-S6085's entertainment credibility even further.

Design
The A665D-S6085's chassis is covered in black plastic, with a textured pattern running across the lid and keyboard deck. I generally prefer the more solid feel you get from a laptop that uses a metal chassis. Others may have different preferences, but there's something disconcerting about pressing down on the lid or keyboard deck and watching the plastic body easily flex under the weight of my fingers. At least the laptop's weight of 5.55 pounds is about average for 16-inch laptops.
Toshiba states that the A665D-S6085 has a 'tile keyboard,' which is a fairly accurate description, as the square shape of the isolated keys looks an awful lot like Scrabble tiles. The keys have decent travel and don't suffer from any noticeable flex. A dedicated number pad is located on the right side of the keyboard, while a set of touch-sensitive buttons sit above the keyboard. The buttons launch the Toshiba eco Utility for advanced power management, toggle the 802.11b/g/n radio on and off, control the volume, play and pause media playback, and toggle the backlit Toshiba logo on the lower-left corner of the wrist rest and a thin LED strip above the touchpad. Unlike the Toshiba A665D-S6051, the A665D-S6085 doesn't have a backlit keyboard (albeit, this is a $40 option for some versions of the A665D—just not this configuration). The touchpad sits flush with the palm rest, supports multitouch gestures, and has a slick surface that makes it practically effortless to use.
Customers who buy this system from Staples can avail themselves of several services the retailer offers. This includes setting the new system up, data transfer from your old PC to your new one, software installation, and tech support and protection plans that range in price from $14.99 to $169.99.
Features
The audio emanating from the A665D-S6085's Harmon Kardon speakers is just as impressive as what the Toshiba A665D-S6051 dished out. The audio has a richness to it that you seldom experience at this price, and I was startled at just how loud the speakers could get—and with no noticeable distortion. I could hear some bass response coming out those two little speaker grilles. If listening to music is your thing, you can connect your MP3 player to the A665D-S6085 to play through the laptop's speakers using the 'Sleep-and-Music' feature, even if the laptop is sleeping or powered down.
If movies are more up your alley, not only do film soundtracks also sound great screaming from the A665D-S6085's speakers, but the laptop's Blu-ray drive lets you watch high-definition movies. The screen is nothing short of awesome and movies look crystal clear with vibrant colors; but since the display has a resolution of 1,366 by 768, you won't be able to enjoy Blu-ray movies in their true native 1080p. I also found that the glossy display had a habit of throwing back distracting reflections in all, but the darkest of rooms. Toshiba also did what I consider a bonehead move with its Toshiba Web Camera Application. It sits as a partially hidden bar on the left side of the screen until you mouse over it and then the app's window pops fully open. But that bar is ever-present, no matter what is on the screen—even full-screen movies, which can be really annoying. When watching movies on the A665D-S6085, you're going to want to close the Toshiba Web Camera Application or prevent it from auto-running in the first place (when the app's window is open, right click to see options to terminate it with extreme prejudice).
In order to watch Blu-ray movies in 1080p, you'd have to send the A665D-S6085's video signal to an external monitor using the laptop's HDMI or VGA ports. In addition to those connections, the A665D-S6085 also sports an ExpressCard/34 slot, a 7-in-1 media-card reader, a Gigabit Ethernet port, and 4 USB 2.0 ports—one of which does double duty as an eSATA port. The combo USB/eSATA port can also be used to charge USB- and eSata-based devices while the laptop is sleeping or off. Note that this 'USB Sleep and Charge' feature is turned off by default (as is the aforementioned 'Sleep-and-Music' feature), and if you want to use it, you must enable it from the Toshiba Sleep Utility application.
Speaking of apps, the A665-S6085 comes with no less than 27 different, pre-installed Toshiba-branded apps. This strikes me as a bit excessive; but a number of them are useful, such as Face Recognition that lets you use the Webcam to logon to the system using facial recognition technology, or the HDD Protection app that warns you when the hard drive's head is auto-parked, because excessive vibration is detected. The A665-S6085 comes with an industry-standard one-year parts and labor warranty, and Toshiba offers toll-free support around the clock.
Performance
Unlike the underpowered 1.6GHz AMD Phenom II P920 processor that drove the Toshiba A665D-S6051, the A665D-S6085 uses a much faster 2.4GHz Intel Core i3-370M processor. Even though the Core i3-370M has only two CPU cores, it still runs circles around the quad-core Phenom II P920 processor. For instance, the A665D-S6085 scored 5,428 on PCMark Vantage, while the Toshiba A665D-S6051 could only muster up a score of 3,502. The 370M is currently Intel's highest-end mobile Core i3 processor. As such, the A665D-S6085's performance is also speedier than the 2.27GHz Core i3-350M-based Acer Aspire TimelineX AS5820T-5951 ($723 street, 4 stars), which got a score of 5,233.
The Acer AS5820T-5951 costs about $77 less than the A665D-S6085, at least in part because of its slower processor, smaller 15.6-inch display, and lack of a Blu-ray drive. The even larger 17-inch display in the Editors' Choice HP Pavilion dv7-4083cl ($999 list, 4 stars), as well as a higher-end 2.4GHz Core i5-450M processor that make that model about $200 more expensive than the A665D-S6085 (the HP dv7-4083cl also includes a Blu-ray drive). The primary difference between the Core i3-350M and Core i5-450M processors are that the Core i3-350M doesn't support Intel's Turbo Boost technology, while the Core i5-450M does—it has a max Turbo frequency of 2.66GHz. On PCMark Vantage this gives the HP dv7-4083cl close to a 5 percent edge over the A665D-S6085. Another factor that makes the HP dv7-4083cl more expensive is its discrete ATI Mobility Radeon 5470 graphics card, unlike the integrated Intel GMA HD graphics engine in the A665D-S6085. This means that you can actually use the HP dv7-4083cl for some moderate 3D games, but the A665D-S6085 is limited to mostly just casual games.
Not only are your gaming options limited with the A665D-S6085, so is your ability to run the laptop for long periods of time on battery power. Certainly, 3 hours 25 minutes is more than long enough to watch Titanic, but it's still well behind the almost 4:30 average for sub-$1,000 desktop replacements. Despite the larger-size screen, the HP dv7-4083cl lasted 4:45; and can be chalked up to its 87WH (9-cell) battery. The A665D-S6085 has a 48WH (6-cell) battery (a 98WH, 12-cell battery is available as a $75 option from Toshiba). The AS5820T-5951 lasted a ridiculously long 7:37, using just a 62WH (6-cell) battery, but it also uses an ultra-low-voltage (CULV) processor that sips far less power than the processors in the A665D-S6085 or HP dv7-4083cl.
With the addition of a Blu-ray drive, and the same incredible-sounding speakers and great looking display, the Toshiba Satellite A665D-S6085 is even that much more of an entertainment powerhouse than its predecessor. The move to a Core i3 processor also now puts the A665D-S6085's performance firmly in competitive territory. But the chink in the A665-S6085's armor has to be its below-average battery life—if you're going to be using your laptop away from a power outlet for long stretches of time, then you're going to need to consider alternatives, like the Editors' Choice HP Pavilion dv7-4083cl.
